Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Haji Mohd. Ismail Merican is presently Pro-Chancellor & Chairman of MAHSA University College, and Senior Consultant Physician & Senior Consultant Hepatologist, Hospital Kuala Lumpur (1991 to date) & Hospital Selayang (1995 to date).

He graduated from Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, with MBBS (1975). He then obtained his MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians), London, in 1980. He trained in Gastroenterology at Hammersmith Hospital, London (1985), and had further specialised training in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy at the Toranomon Hospital, Tokyo (1987), for which he was awarded “The Most Outstanding Fellow Award”. He then went for specialised training in Hepatology at The Royal Free Hospital, London (1991-1992).

He has received numerous awards – national, state, and others, amongst which are Award of Excellence for being Top Candidate in the Leadership and Management Course for Senior Government officers (Pra JUSA Course)(1998), Vocational Service Award for 'exemplary personal dedication, commitment and service to Research and Development in the field of liver diseases in Malaysia' by Rotary Club, Kuala Lumpur North (2003), the Malaysian Medical Association Gold Medal (2005), given for outstanding contribution to the health sector by any individual or organisation.


Tan Sri Was President of Universiti Malaya Medical Alumni Association (1993-1995), Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (1994-1995), Malaysian Society for the Study of Obesity (1994-1996)(also Founder President), Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy (1997-1999), College of Physicians of Malaysia (2000-2004), Malaysian Liver Foundation (1996 to date)(also Founder President).


He has been appointed on the Board of various International Organisations, e.g. Chairman of the Joint Coordinating Board of the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research & Training in Tropical Diseases, based in Geneva; Member of the Expert Working Group on the APASL Chronic Hepatitis B Guideline Committee; Member of the American Assoc. for the Study of Liver Diseases (since 2001); Member of the European Assoc. for the Study of Liver (since 2004); Official Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians (UK) Membership Examination (since 1997 till present).


His other contributions to medicine and research are the setting up of the first specialised Hepatology Unit in Malaysia, initially at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (1992), and currently at Hospital Selayang (since 1999), editing 'Liver Atlas and Casebook: a showcase of interesting cases managed by Selayang Hospital, Malaysia' (published by Malaysian Liver Foundation, 2009), being Principal Investigator for numerous multicentre international trials, especially in the field of liver diseases.


He has more than 80 publications in local & international peer-reviewed journals.







Dato' Dr. Jacob Thomas
President
Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia

Dato’ Dr Jacob Thomas, a medical doctor, has vast experience in hospital management, having served in various capacities at the Sime Darby Medical Centre, including as its Executive Director from 1998 till 2006.

He is currently the Group Medical Advisor of Sime Darby Healthcare in addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the hospital. Sime Darby Medical Centre is a leading tertiary care medical centre in the region, reputed for its quality medical care and service excellence.

Dr Jacob Thomas is currently the President of the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia (APHM) and also a member of the Consultative Panel of Healthcare sector of the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) which promotes inter-hospital benchmarking among the major private hospitals in Malaysia.

He serves as a Councilor of the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) which is an accredited member of ISQua. He is a member of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council. He is also a member of the “Asia Pacific Regional Advisory Council” of JCI. Dr Thomas today works closely with various Government agencies to promote Malaysian Healthcare both locally and internationally. In addition, Dr Jacob has been appointed President of the Asian Hospital Federation effective January 2012.







Dame Ramziah Hj. Ahmad
President of Malaysian Nurses Association

Currently she is a Dean of Nursing Faculty, Allianze University College of Medical Sciences, Kepala Batas, Penang. She is the President of Malaysian Nurses Association (MNA), since 2006 till now. She had done many changes in the development of MNA that benefited her members such as developing a training institute for its members, increasing financial stability, improve leadership skills and demonstrated outstanding role model.

A Board Member of Commonwealth Nurses Federation – Pacific Region (2009-2011) and now Asia Region, the first Malaysian Nurse who had been accepted in the International position in the last 26 years. As a board member of CNF, MNA had financially supported Pacific Region to improve their educational system.

Being Board Member of CNF, she chaired the meeting in London, presented a Leadership presentation at International Conference, Auckland, New Zealand, Midwifery presentation in Washington DC and Hyderabad; including New Delhi and Sri Lanka and other countries including Taiwan, Jakarta, Durban, Botswana and Singapore.

She is an International Speaker invited to speak in most continents in the world. Involved twice in international debates at Geneva and Malta. Became the best debater at Geneva 2010. She had received several awards nationally and internationally. Recently, she was invited to speak at Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers (MAPS) International Congress and as paper presenter at National Healthcare Leadership Conference, PWTC 2012. Invited to speak at International Conference for Medico Legal Association titled “Doctors and Nurses in Conflict” at Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.

First Malaysian lady to be awarded Dame which is equivalent to Sir – an International recognition. She is also a board member of several organizations. Member of Nursing Board Malaysia. Served Ministry of Health (MOH) for 36 years. During that time she was also a Trainer, National Researcher and Ward Management Consultant. She has published 5 national research during her service with Ministry of Health (MOH). She has been awarded the Best Nurse Researcher by MOH (2008).

She was awarded PJK by DYMM Raja of Perlis and AMN by DYMM Yang DiPertuan Agong. Three times Excellent Service Award from MOH. Best impromptu Speaker from Public Speaking Academy. Certified Professional Trainer and Member of Association of Managers, both from United Kingdom.

She had interviewed 8 CEO’s in 8 hospitals in Adelaide, Australia, accompanied by WHO Consultant during her management course. She had attended Human Resource and Staff Appraisal from Global Institute, London. She had also been awarded as an active member of International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management, United States of America.

She is the founder of De Ram Training and Consultancy (DRTC) focusing on Corporate & Government and Leadership & Management. Moreover, she has more than 18 years of extensive experiences in training and consultancy. She was interviewed by mass media (TV, radio, magazines and newspapers). Her interviews were mainly on her personal achievements and her contributions to NGO in the last 18 years of leadership position in NGO – MNA.

She had obtained Advanced Nursing Administration and Bachelor in Nursing Sciences (Hon.), both from University of Malaya. She had been Master of Ceremonies since young for the Royal functions, the Governor’s and informal functions and the latest discovery she became Wedding Master of Ceremonies.
